Just 9 km from Livadia, accessible by bus from Livadia to Megalo Chorio, Eristos is one of Tilos’s sandy beach treasures. Over a kilometre long and very wide, it alternates between sandy and pebbly stretches shaded by tamarisks—perfect for sunbathing and relaxation.
Situated in a panoramic location, Plaka is undoubtedly one of the island’s loveliest sandy beaches. Its pristine sea is reached via the scenic road to the Monastery of Agios Panteleimon, offering peace, serenity, and breathtaking views.
The island’s capital, nestled amphitheatrically on a hillside in the north, crowned by the Knights of St. John Castle with its 16th‑century frescoes. Nearby lie the Chalkadion caves, where remains of dwarf elephants—120–150 cm tall and extinct about 3,700 years ago—were discovered in 1971 and are displayed in a small museum. Also worth visiting is the Orthodox church, famed for its striking icons.
Perched at 800 m northeast of Megalo Chorio, this historic monastery (est. 1470) may be built atop an ancient temple of Poseidon. Surrounded by limestone paving, it was renovated in 1703 and 1824. Its exquisite icon dates to the 17th century.
A medieval settlement abandoned in 1940, Mikro Chorio still hosts the remains of churches, a small castle, a watchtower, and stone-built homes harmonised with nature. At night, one restored building turns into a club where you can dance to both contemporary and Greek music under starlight.
From Livadia beach, an old stone path traverses the southern slopes, loops around the hill of Kastelos (with medieval fortress ruins), and ends at the abandoned village of Gera. The crumbling houses evoke a mysterious journey into the island’s past.
